Humanitarian Aid
In 2001 as the war was dying down, the EU began to administer humanitarian aid, in the form of medical aid, to Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone still faced a major humanitarian challenge with an estimated 450,000 displaced people living in camps and host communities. To help these people, the intervention plan is going to help the internally displaced people by covering basic needs such as water, sanitation health care, nutrition, and the supple of relief items and give special support to children (including young ex-combatants) and women affected by the war, as well as amputees (EU Humanitarian Aid).
The EU aid has promoted economic growth through education. With a more highly skilled work force, firms are able to be more productive, leading to increased export revenues. And when people are employed, they have more money to spend on necessities that can be used to support their families. In this way, economic growth leads to economic development.
By providing sanitation, nutrition, water, and other health items, the EU is able to increase economic development in Sierra Leone. In order for the well-being of a population to grow, the people of the country must have access to things that are going to make them healthier. In addition, education leads to decisions that benefit the health of individuals and their families. Lastly, by focusing on children, the EU is creating a healthier future for the country.
The aid has helped Sierra Leone. During the war, there was almost no aid present in Sierra Leone because the conditions were too dangerous for outsiders to get involved. Now that the conflict has settled and access to rural villages is open, researchers and aid workers are able to go to these villages and work closely with its inhabitants. In this fashion, westerns are able to understand the situation and provide appropriate care. For the first time Sierra Leoneans are feeling like the world cares. With help to be put back on their feet, the country has had renewed confidence.

Development Aid
The OPEC Fund for International Development today signed a US$9.5 million loan agreement with the Republic of Sierra Leone to help finance a commodity imports program. The loan will provide the country with much-needed foreign currency to help release funds for servicing debt and support government's aim to promote Sierra Leone's economic development. The OPEC Fund has previously approved seven loans to Sierra Leone, three of which provided balance of payments support and four loans that supported projects in the energy and transportation sectors (OPEC).
The loans will promote economic development in Sierra Leone because the country now can focus on other aspects of the economy such as education and health care, instead of financing the debt. As shown by the production possibilities curve below, the more money Sierra Leone spends on their debt, the less they can spend on other services that could foster economic growth and development.

Sierra Leone Energy Access Project
The Government of Sierra Leone has applied for financing in the amount of US$ 16,000,000.00 equivalent from the World Bank and intends to apply part of the proceeds to payments for goods, works, related services and consulting services to be procured under this project. The objective of the project is to: (i) improve the efficiency of electricity supply in the Capital City, Freetown in the Western area; (ii) reduce technical and non-technical losses; (iii) increase access to electricity in selected rural areas.
They will do this by strengthening the primary distribution network including overhead lines and substations and by installing photovoltaic systems in public buildings in 14 rural villages. Although this does not seem like a lot, providing any amount of towns with electricity will allow people to preserve food and cook healthier meals. Also, this project will provide many Sierra Leoneans with jobs (Energy). The increase in jobs will allow more people to obtain higher incomes which they can spend on more goods and services within the economy and support these industries, therefore fostering more economic growth and development within the struggling nation.

Non-Government Organizations
ActionAid is a NGO working with children in Sierra Leone. ActionAid’s work boosts education levels after the damage to many schools during the civil war. They work with rural communities to provide accommodation for teachers and promote the importance of education for girls as well as boys. In addition, ActionAid works to provide healthcare, safe childbirth practices and clean water and lobbies governments to change the policies and practices that affect the lives of poor people.
They work with 158,000 people who are sponsored by people all over the world. In this way, a child gets the support they need and the country is able to prosper (ActionAid).
These efforts contribute to growth because children are being blessed with living a life that will benefit them and their countries in the future. As stated many times before, education will prepare the students for a competitive work force and a more highly-skilled job. Profits leads to the ability to support a family, rendering the country better off via the multiplier effect.
With improved education for boys and girls, the gender inequality will diminish, contributing to economic development. Hopefully there is a spot for women in the work place so they are able to exercise their new found empowerment.
